USER-FRIENDLY bus stops are proving to be just the ticket in County Durham.
A £140,000 package of improvements by Durham County Council is under way, with the second phase now completed in Newton Aycliffe.
A total of 120 stops in the town have been improved, putting them on the same level as easy access buses and making it easier for people with disabilities, older people and those with pushchairs to board.
All the stops were surveyed by the council before the work began to raise kerbs and footways, improve standing areas and renew worn or missing bus stop poles and signs.
Bus stop boxes, aimed at deterring motorists from parking, have also been painted on roads so that buses can pull up to the kerb.
A further phase of the work will be carried out in Newton Aycliffe later in the year when extra footway links to some bus stops will be constructed
