The Tees proved a popular choice on the match calendar last weekend as 88 anglers lined the banks between Croft to Hurworth during the Thornaby AA charity open, writes JEFF HERBERT.

Cold water kept the dace at bay and chub were the mainstay from a venue slightly up and coloured.

Those in the frame weighed in all chub and luncheon meat was the key to success.

Ken Close of RSPS finished out in front of the rest delivering 12 specimens which included a trio over the 3lb mark for a commendable 18-13-0.

Tackling an unfancied draw on peg 59 on the Groynes, Close float fished luncheon meat adding two of his fish in the closing stages.

The winner was Darlington regular, Maurice Mudd, who secured five samples for 10-3-0.

Other results: Dave Boynes (Darlington) 9-15-0, Bobby Trees (Thornaby) 8-12-0.

Competitors also turned out in force for the Yarm AA June Open staged on the Lower Reaches around Yarm. Skimmer bream dictated the schoresheet for the second successive week as bright sunny conditions prevailed.

The Wards Lane section produced the winner but it was a close contest.

Cleveland Angler Centre's Steve Wood pulled peg 28 out of the bag and initially fed ground bait. Utilising the pole at 11 metres with double worm, fish fed steadily throughout. Steve caught nine skimmer around the pound mark plus bits boosting his nett 13-9-0

Martin Robson of Dick Clegg Metro was relegated to second place. Employing identical tactics to Steve but only going out eight metres, the skimmers responded off peg 75 to make for 13-4-0 from Eric Brown, Bigwaters 7-15-0.

There was six inches of extra water in for Northallerton and District's first open on their prolific Swale Waters which now boasts the upper river record of 114-2-0.

The level and colour ruled out massive returns but almost half the field took double figures.

Keighley's Steve Newns drew the Thrinton block which is not a form peg at this time of the year and finished with 32-2-0. An opening two hours on the float proved barren. Switching to feeder and caster, nine big chub off farside willows ensured the final verdict.

David Robson of Selby slipped into the runners up spot. Staked downstream of Morton Bridge, a dozen chub of stick float and caster totalled 31-1-0 but anyone of four lost fish could have swung the result his way.

There was a disappointing turnout of just 32 rods for the River Nidd championship around Knaresborough. Local star, Brian Sowerby, lifted the title drawing noted peg 131 on the Goldsborough length. Opting for stick float and caster approach nine chub and one barbel came at intervals making for a terrific bag of 32-7-0 from Boroughbridge's Eddie McEvoy 16lbs.

Tri Cast Elton's John Allerton gave another classy performance as he doubled the runners up weight hauling out a big carp net of 54-13-0 to take Saturday's Woodland Lake's Open.

Pegged on Partridge 23, John showed his versatility as his paste and pellets tempted carp to 4lbs on the pole at five and 11 metres.

It was tight for second place with many anglers only a decent fish away. Keith Friatt of Elton Tackle edged ahead on 26-9-0 from Partridge 35.

The second round of the North Central League on Lingerfield Gravels resulted in a runaway landslide victory for Dave Wilson returning 30-14-0.
