Ripon Junior Open

Ripon Tennis Centre successfully hosted the LTA Ripon Junior Open which attracted 144 entries and produced 162 matches over two weekends. It was the first time the event had been completed without a rain interruption.

The strong national entry made it tough going for local competitors but Hayden Andrew from Kirkby Malzeard, near Ripon, showed his potential by finishing third in the round-robin in the U-10 event. He missed out on a place in the final stages by just two games.

Harrogate twins Andrew and Michael Peretti both reached the quarter finals of the U-10s with Andrew bowing out to eventual winner, Alex Kragiopoulas from Leeds 6-3. Michael lost 6-3 to Tom Davies of Hull.

In the girls' U-10 competition Samantha Carr of Bedale finished third.

U-14 Jennie Budden (Derbys) beat Hayley Smith (York) 6-4, 6-3

U-16 Jo Ashbridge (Tyne and Wear) beat Lucy Fletcher (Cheshire) walk-over

Harrogate and District League

Dacre failed to lift themselves from bottom spot in Division One of the Harrogate and District Tennis League's First Division as they went down 2.5-6.5 to Knaresborough. Knaresborough have now moved into fourth place but are seven points adrift from league-leaders Harrogate Racquets. And have played a match more that their top of the table rivals.

Dacre, with just one win in six matches, are bottom with two points with Ben Rhydding just above them with two points also however, they have a better rubbers' average.

In Divison Two Bedale continued their remarkable run beating second in the table Harrogate Racquets A 8-1, and at the same time opened up a five point gap over their nearest rivals.

l The centre has been chosen to stage the North Yorkshire Junior Open Tennis Championship for the first time.

Lawn Tennis Association backed North Yorkshire event was originally held at Low Harrogate and Harrogate Sports Club before moving to Knaresborough.

Ripon centre coach Jeremy Hickmans said they were delighted to have been chosen as the new venue.
