Next week in Helsinki, Sue Rolph (Newcastle) defends the European 100m freestyle title she won in Istanbul last year when becoming the first British woman to win a European gold medal since Anita Lonsborough in the 200m breaststroke at Leipzig in 1962 and only the fourth ever to win an individual European long course title, writes ERIC WILKINSON.
Sue won it in style but with only 20 metres to go it looked as if she would not win, but a brilliant burst over the last 10 metres gave her victory in Commonwealth and British record times. She also got bronze medals in the 4x100m medley and freestyle teams. She is one of an 18-strong GB team and also swims in the 200m individual medley.
Newcastle's Andrew Thirlwell was the most successful Twin Counties swimmer with four wins, 15yrs 50m and 100m freestyle, 200m backstroke and individual medley, when the first half of the North-East Counties long course age group championships were staged at Sheffield, last weekend.
Tom Maine (Middlesbrough) scored a hat-trick, 16yrs 200m backstroke, 50m and 100m freestyle and is favourite to add the 100m backstroke and 200m freestyle during the second half at Leeds this weekend.
Clubmate Natasha Crawley had two wins, 14yrs 100m butterfly and freestyle and is the fastest qualifier in three, 100m backstroke, 200m freestyle and individual medley at Leeds.
Newcastle's Danielle Berry also got two golds, 12yrs 100m butterfly and freestyle and is in pole position in two, 200m individual medley and 400m freestyle, this weekend. Tara Johnson (Newburn) was first in the 14yrs 400m individual medley and 800 freestyle and should complete a hat-trick in the 400m freestyle as should Rachel Thompson (Newcastle) winner of the 16yrs 200m individual medley and has the fastest entry times for the 200m butterfly and 400m individual medley. Chester-le-Street's Steven Gawman is in line for successive doubles having taken the 13yrs 200m and 400m individual medleys and is in pole position for the 200m and 400m freestyle. Chris Surtees (Middlesbrough) won the 16yrs 200m butterfly and individual medley and leads the qualifiers for the 100m butterfly. His clubmate James Carter was first in the 13yrs 200m breaststroke, Stephanie Proud (Chester-le-Street) was the 12yrs 100m backstroke winner.
