PROPOSED use of a quarry between Brompton-on-Swale and Scorton as a landfill waste site has been condemned by councillors.
Richmondshire planning committee voted to object to North Yorkshire County Council's inclusion of Tancred quarry in its draft waste local plan.
A report to a meeting of the committee said the former sand and gravel pit was next to Scorton lakes, set aside for potential recreational use and home to breeding and wintering birds. It is also close to homes.
The report, by Peter Featherstone, development control team leader, said the inclusion of Tancred quarry had been made with insufficient environmental safeguards.
The committee agreed to lodge a formal objection and press the county council to examine ways of reducing and recycling waste.
