ENERGY conscious youngsters received a cheque for £2,500 to help beat the energy thieves.

Pupils from Stockton's Hartburn Primary celebrated the handing over of the grant by British Gas, yesterday.

The money will be used to introduce methods of reducing heating and lighting bills. Money saved on top of the £2,500 will benefit the school.

Headteacher Tom Gittins said: "The school is doing its best to save as much as possible on energy costs, such as heating and lighting, so we can then spend the money on improving education.

"We estimate we can save £2,500 in the next four years, so anything extra saved will be free for spending on equipment and teaching. That maximises the amount we have to spend on what we're best at, giving children the best education possible.''

The award was made through the school energy scheme, funded by British Gas. It was launched in 1998, in partnership with the Energy Saving Trust, and has helped more than 1,000 schools make major energy savings up to one third.
