OFFICIALS have rejected rumours that they plan to shut down a former pit village's library.
They say that, not only will Sacriston Library be staying open, it will be fitted with a computer system to improve the service.
Earlier this year, Chester-le-Street District Council shut the village's 30-year-old baths, saying it was making a loss and needed expensive refurbishment.
When news of the council's plans leaked out, the village launched a campaign to save the pool, but councillors rejected proposals from residents to set up a trust to keep it going.
Now villagers fear that the library, run by Durham County Council, is about to suffer the same fate and have been asking staff when it will close.
But Joan Robinson, area library group manager, said: "The council wants to make it clear that Sacriston is very much part of village life and will continue to be so.
"The new computerised system will dramatically improve the service on offer. Borrowers will be able to take 12 books, and order titles that are not in stock, for a small charge.
"Already, residents can surf the Web absolutely free, using the library's excellent Internet facilities.
"Sacriston Library will continue to be a valuable asset for the community, offering everyone the opportunity to learn new and exciting skills.''
A county council spokesman added: "The rumours are obviously linked to the closure of the baths. There seems to be the feeling that the village is dying.
"People keep asking when the library is going to close - but it is just not true.''
The library is also gearing up for the school summer holidays by organising free craft sessions for local youngsters.
