A POLICE officer quizzed in connection with an armed robbery is to be charged with drugs offences.

PC Arthur Swaine had been questioned by detectives investigating a raid on a post office in the Yorkshire Dales, but was later released without charge.

Yesterday, North Yorkshire Police said the officer, who has been suspended since January, will now face an allegation of possession of cannabis.

PC Swaine, a licensing officer based in York, had achieved national prominence over a series of initiatives, including using sniffer dogs to search for drugs in nightclubs and setting up a training and registration scheme for bouncers.

A police spokesman said: "A York police officer was arrested in January in connection with an alleged robbery at Burton-in-Lonsdale post office. The officer is to appear at Harrogate Magistrates' Court on August 18 to be charged with possession of cannabis. He remains suspended from duty.
