FOOTBALL'S golden boy Wilf Mannion was remembered by young soccer hopefuls yesterday.
Talented players from Alderman William Jones County School in Middlesbrough became the proud winners of the Wilf Mannion Cup, in a new primary schools tournament.
Mr Mannion's daughter, Catherine Bain, presented the trophy to the winners of the seven-a-side competition held at the Middlesbrough Football Community Centre, at Eston.
The centre, which is backed by Middlesbrough Football Club and is close to where Wilf grew up, hosted 30 teams of boys and girls from schools throughout Teesside.
Alderman William Jones beat Marton Manor School, Marton, 3-0 in the final.
Former Boro star Jim Platt, the centre's head coach, named the new trophy after the late Mr Mannion as a tribute to a player widely regarded as the greatest in Middlesbrough's long history.
The centre is a joint initiative by Middlesbrough FC, Redcar and Cleveland Council and Sport England
