A SEARCH for community champions has proved fruitful in Stockton, with more than 30 people volunteering.
Stockton Adult Education Service is leading the search for local champions.
All 31 volunteers attended the first community champions training session, launched by Bob Gibson, Stockton Borough Council's leader, on Wednesday, June 28.
The project aims to provide the skills that local people need to become neighbourhood 'helpers', who will work with residents, encouraging them to develop basic skills such as reading, writing and maths.
Vera Walker, a local resident said yesterday: "I didn't realise just how many people have trouble with basic skills, and I'm pleased to be able to get involved and help people in my community."
John Harris, adult education officer at the borough council, said: "The volunteers showed lots enthusiasm and commitment towards the project.
"It is hoped some of these community champions will go on to be adult education tutors, making learning accessible in the friendly setting of the local community."
