YOUNGSTERS disappointed by a washed-out British Steel family gala are being given another chance to have fun this weekend.

For the first time in its history, the Teesside British Steel gala was cancelled on Sunday - just hours before it was due to start - because of torrential rain and flooding.

Children who had spent weeks looking forward to the day were left without any entertainment, by the unexpected weather.

But to reward the youngsters for their hard work decorating floats, the organisers have decided to re-run the procession this Sunday - weather permitting.

Organiser David Adamson said: "The children have put lots of hard work into these floats, so were disappointed.

"It's the first time that the gala has been cancelled on the day, although three years ago it was cancelled in advance, because of continual rain.

"It was sad for all of us, because so many people had looked forward to it for so long. We hope this procession will give everyone a small taste of what the gala would have been like."

The procession will take place around the British Steel Lackenby Works, with people able to see the floats at the Steel House car park in Redcar at 12.30pm.

Prizes will be presented to the best floats.

The organisers are also planning a fun day in September, to run the sports events.
