A KNIFE-edge run-up to a first night performance could spark new moves for a Teesdale drama company.
After one of the wettest Junes on record, ticket sales were slow for the Castle Players' annual outdoor production at the Bowes museum.
Players' spokesman Ms Carole Cuthbertson said this week that an indoor alternative could be a possibility in future.
As the Barnard Castle company prepared to present the swashbuckling Restoration comedy Beaux Stratagem on Wednesday, Ms Cuthbertson said ticket sales had picked up as people scanned forecasts, hoping for a fine evening as Castle Players' productions go ahead outside whatever the weather.
"We were so pleased as sales picked up as the first night got nearer, but things had been a bit slow," she said.
Ms Cuthbertson said an indoor alternative could happen in the future.
"It would not replace the outdoor event as people do like theatre outside and it is worth taking the risk of rain to have that," she said. "Having the production inside would spoil the whole atmosphere."
But she said if planned redevelopment at Witham Hall went ahead, this could present new opportunities.
A lottery bid is in its early stages and a feasibility study is being done to see if the hall has potential for better community use.
"If the venue had a decent performing space we could stage productions there," said Ms Cuthbertson.
Presenting the George Farquhar comedy marked the company's second year away from its traditional Shakespeare.
The Players first made a change last year with Sheridan's School for Scandal.
"We have worked our way through Shakespeare's light-hearted works and there is a potential to go back to the Bard at any time," said Ms Cuthbertson.
Beaux Strategem is on at the Bowes museum tonight and tomorrow at 7.30. There is an extended interval for picnics in the grounds and fireworks after each performance. Tickets are available from Priors, Curlews and the Bowes museum.
