FIVE primary schools in Hartlepool have earned a seal of approval from a Government agency for providing high standards in education.
Barnard Grove, Rossmere, St Aidan's, St Cuthbert's and Ward Jackson received the Quality Mark, from the Basic Skills Agency, during a ceremony in the town's civic centre.
It was the first time Barnard Grove, Rossmere, St Aidan's and St Cuthbert's had received the award, but Ward Jackson had its renewed.
It became the first primary school in the town to gain Quality Mark status three years ago.
Schools must satisfy ten stringent criteria, such as improving performance in basic skills, the effective use of a range of teaching styles, and the involvement of parents in developing their children's skills.
Schools also have to show that standards have risen in literacy and numeracy.
Jeremy Fitt, Hartlepool Borough Council's director of education, said: "The growing number of schools receiving the Quality Mark is impressive.
"The Quality Mark is principally concerned with basic skills, which play an important part in improving the effectiveness of any school."
Other primary schools to hold the award include Kingsley, Rift House, Fens, Lynnfield, Sacred Heart, St Joseph's, West Park and St Teresa's.
Assessment for the award, which lasts for three years, is carried out by council education officers.
Any primary school can apply for Quality Mark. They should contact Alan Farrage at Hartlepool council on (01429) 523744
