THE people of a small village will celebrate more than two thousand years of history this weekend.

Organisers of the millennium celebration at the village of Ebchester, near Consett, County Durham, which dates back to Roman times, will concentrate on the history of the village in a number of events.

Members of the Ebchester Community Association raised more than £2,000, mainly with the support of Derwentside District Council and the Millennium Festival Awards for All organisation.

Events being held today include a display of an innovative giant quilt created by local artists, which depicts an embroidered aerial view of the North-East, and a village barbecue and dance.

Tomorrow, there will be a craft fair, and a Millennium Bowl - which features a Roman coin found in the village, will also be displayed.

Other events include an exhibition of old photographs, an open-air church service for the whole village on Sunday, and a competition to design a village logo.
