THE weekend sunshine helped to attract 2,000 people to Staindrop Carnival, near Darlington.
The bumper turn-out was matched by the carnival, which was bigger than ever, with extra events organised to commemorate the millennium.
Children's floats, a pipe band, a greasy pole contest, a pet show, photography and art competitions and a 'splat the rat' fairground game were among the attractions.
"It was one of the best we've had in years," said Staindrop carnival committee member Alison Gates.
"It lasted all week, as we had a treasure hunt and a talent night in the build up to the weekend. Everyone saw the miserable weather on Friday night and thought 'Oh no'. But it turned out fine and we had a very healthy turn-out this year."
Pipe dancers and clog dancers from Richmond added to the fun on Saturday, while youngsters took part in a sports day yesterday.
The origin of Staindrop Carnival has been lost through the years, but it dates back at least 70 years.
