A FORMER rubble-strewn back lane has been transformed into the North-East's newest tourist attraction by a one-woman ground force.
Five years of toil by gardener Sue Jackson has changed the pothole-ridden lane behind flats in Hamilton Terrace, West Boldon, South Tyneside.
It is now open to visitors every Sunday and features in a guide by the National Gardeners Scheme.
The once-neglected lane also hosts an annual barbecue for residents, which has become an eagerly anticipated event.
Sue filled in the holes and covered the surface with gravel. She then planted climbing plants, which bloom on trellises, along with hardy shrubs and perennial flowers.
With the help of neighbours, she laid a patio and strip of lawn.
Sue said she began her project following an operation.
"I threw myself into bringing the alley back to life and I am delighted with the way it looks now," she said.
"It was hard work at times but, looking at it now, I think it was very much worthwhile.
"It has gone from strength to strength. If it is a nice day people now come out for a natter and a cup of tea.
"It has become a focal point for the community."
