TRANSPORT chiefs are to double fares for children travelling on Tyne and Wear's Metro system during evenings and at weekends to tackle unruly behaviour.
The move to scrap the 25p Metro ticket for under-16s will cut Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Authority's concession travel bill.
If the plan is a approved at a meeting of the authority on Thursday, young people will have to pay 50p to use the Metro .
At the same time, primary school pupils will be given free travel up to 7pm on weekdays during term time to make the Metro more attractive to families.
The move will benefit 95,000 people aged 11 and under.
Meanwhile pensioners and the disabled in Tyne and Wear face an increase in cut-price travel from 25p to 30p a journey.
The changes are expected to cut the transport authority's £23.3m a year concessionary travel bill by £2.8m. If agreed, they will come into effect in September.
