TWO streakers who dashed on to the pitch during the England cricket match at Chester-le-Street will not be charged.

The two men bared all on Saturday, as England beat the West Indies in the Nat West Triangular Series at the Riverside Ground, home of Durham County Cricket Club.

The pair, who drew cheers from the 16,000 sell-out crowd, were arrested and then ejected from the ground.

A police spokesman said yesterday that they would not be prosecuted for their cheeky pitch invasion.

Only six arrests were made during the match, the biggest sporting occasion the County Durham force has policed since 1974 when it was responsible for crowd control at Sunderland FC games.

The other four were for drink-related offences and will not lead to charges.

All the people arrested were England supporters.

There was only one arrest at Sunday's match, between Zimbabwe and the West Indies - a would-be streaker who was stopped as he tried to scale a fence.

Police were out in force at the weekend, backed up by stewards from the cricket club and Chester-le-Street District Council.

Traffic was cleared from the ground within an hour of Saturday's game finishing. On Sunday, the traffic was gone within half an hour.

Chief Inspector Jamie McAloon, of Durham Police, said: "I was very pleased indeed with the way the police operation went across the whole weekend.

"The Riverside is a car crime hotspot, but there were no offences of cars being taken or broken into, thanks to a partnership between the police and the council.

"We had specials and stewards who patrolled the area and there were no problems.''
