AMBULANCE worker Robert Bell has earned the thanks of a grateful patient and with it a top national award.
Mr Bell, who works from Bishop Auckland Ambulance Station and lives at Ferryhill, was presented with the Ambulance Service Institute's Care Assistant Award 2000 at an ambulance exhibition in Harrogate.
He was overwhelmed at receiving the accolade.
Mr Bell said: "I was so surprised to get this award, especially because a patient has to nominate you. This award is very special to me. It makes me feel that I'm doing my job right.
"Patients appreciate it more when they know that the staff do actually care, and it is more rewarding when you have a good relationship with them."
Arthur Lenin, head of patient transport services for the North-East Ambulance Service NHS Trust, said: "This is a very prestigious award to win. I am very proud of Robert and he should be congratulated on his achievement, particularly because it was related to patient care."
