POLLY Pear and Molly Milk joined youngsters at Darlington's Abbey Infant School to promote healthy eating.
The cartoon characters, part of the Good Food Gang, have been developed by the town's school meals service.
Six schools in Darlington have received Heartbeat awards for promoting healthy food options and maintaining good standards of hygiene.
They include Abbey Infant School, where youngsters can pick from healthy food options with lower fat, low or no salt, higher fibre and little sugar content.
The Heartbeat scheme is being promoted by Darlington Borough Council and Darlington Primary Care Group.
A council spokesman said: "This is part of Darlington's continuing development to meet existing school meals nutritional requirements and promote healthier lifestyles.
"We hope eventually to launch the scheme in all of Darlington's primary schools."
Schools receiving the awards are Abbey Junior School, Abbey Infant School, Beaumont Hill First School, Beaumont Hill Middle School, Hurworth Primary School and Middleton St George Primary School.
