MORE than 4,500 walkers will be descending on the village of Wolsingham for the Great North Walk tomorrow.
People of all ages and from all walks of life will be taking a step in the right direction for the eight-mile ramble from Wolsingham Recreation Ground, in the Wear Valley.
The sheer number of participants taking part in The Northern Echo-sponsored event has created problems.
The closing entry date for the walk was extended to meet demand, and organisers decided to stagger start times, limiting the number of people setting off at once to 1,000 every 20 minutes.
The first start time is at 10am and Sir Jimmy Savile will be joining supporters in releasing 2,000 balloons to bid walkers on their way.
Among the ramblers will be several pupils from Peases West Primary School, from Billy Row.
The start of the walk will continue along a newly created riverside path created by the Wolsingham Wayfarers group and will pass through Towdy Potts Farm towards Weardale Way.
Along the circular route, there will be stunning views of the Wear Valley.
Sponsors of the walk include Tyne Tees Television, Wear Valley District Council and Nova International.
