DURHAM City's Tourist Information Centre in the Market Place is to open seven days a week after doubling its staff to eight.
The new recruits - Philippa Miller, Margaret Thompson, Helen Raisbeck and Michelle Hancock - began duty last weekend, which was one of the busiest.
John Jennings, Durham City Council's director of environmental services, said the council was investing extra money in the centre because it was vital in marketing the city.
Earlier in the year the council was criticised because the centre was closed at weekends when visitors flock to the city.
Plans to build a new TIC over the A690 were scuppered by Durham County Council. The centre will instead move to the new Millennium Hall.
