World Cup winning legend Sir Geoff Hurst is to sell his collection of footballing memorabilia for an estimated £180,000 and will donate some of the proceeds to a charity cancer fund named after 1966 England captain Bobby Moore, writes PAUL SIMS.
The 129-piece collection, which will be auctioned at the end of September, includes the red long-sleeved and No 10 shirt worn by Hurst when he scored the only World Cup Final hat-trick against West Germany which is expected to fetch £30,000.
Sir Geoff, 58, was knighted the Queen in 1998. It was his three goals that inspired England to a famous 4-2 extra-time victory against the then West Germany in 1966.
He said he had decided to auction off the collection spanning 43 years in the game after discussing it with his family.
One item that will be staying close to Sir Geoff, however, is the 1966 World Cup winner's medal.
''I have no immediate plans for the medal,'' he said.
''It's not in the collection because I have a gut feeling it's not the right thing to do or the right time to do it.''
Part of the money raised from the auction will go towards The Bobby Moore Imperial Cancer Research Fund and The Brain and Spine Foundation.
