ANGRY elderly residents in an East Cleveland village have sent a petition to Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council asking it to replace their unmanageable windows.

The pensioners live in council properties in Shepherd Court and Fenton Street, Boosbeck, and 90 per cent of them have signed the petition to Iain Sim, director of housing.

Councillor Steve Kay said that the houses were built in the early 1980s and the windows are not double-glazed, but do have a form of secondary glazing which allows residents to take out panes for cleaning.

Coun Kay said: "This type of secondary glazing is difficult for aged people to clean without damaging themselves, because, to do the job properly, the inner panes have to be removed. They don't do the job very well, they are always loose and draughty and they often rattle.

"It is essential that these dangerous windows are removed as soon as possible. They are very common in other parts of east Cleveland, like Lingdale and Skinningrove, too.
