YOUNGSTERS have been getting first-hand experience in writing from a North-East author.
The group of year six pupils, who are due to start at the secondary Bishopsgarth School, Stockton, in September, were taking part in a literacy summer school.
David Almond, from Newcastle, who has written numerous books was at the school offering children the chance to pick up tips on finding ideas and having the courage to develop them.
Mary Priestley, head of English at the school, said: "It is a good opportunity for the children to meet a writer and discuss various styles with him.
"At the end of the day it is hoped the children have picked up ideas and have gained more encouragement to develop their writing.
"It is a great way to bridge the gap between primary and secondary school."
