SUNDERLAND families are helping to shape the dream of an environmentally-friendly city.
More than 170 residents are expected to attend a conference - Towards a Better Future - today to discuss the city council's Local Agenda 21 strategy.
People will be told what is already being done to make Sunderland a greener place and the sort of things they can do in the future.
Ideas such as community recycling, cycle path development, energy saving and healthy living projects will be discussed. Local Agenda 21 coordinator Steve Graham said: "People tend to think Local Agenda 21 and sustainability are just about the environment.
"But it's also about what we can do to encourage economic growth, employment and social justice."
The conference is being held in the Sir Tom Cowie Lecture Theatre, Sunderland University, from 9.30am to 3.45pm.
Speakers include Sunderland South MP Chris Mullin, Tidy Britain director Marian Harrison and council environment director William Ault.
