THE toughest of mathematical theories proved a doddle for youngsters from Conyers School, in Yarm, who have shown they are high fliers in mathematics.

National Maths Challenges, organised by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust from the School of Mathematics, at the University of Leeds, have been tackled with gusto by the youngsters.

They brought home 19 gold, 48 silver and 72 bronze medals in the junior and intermediate sections, which cover all age groups. Students in years 12 and 13, entered the Senior Maths Challenge and gained 11 silver and 13 bronze medals.

Several students were invited to take part in the next round as they had scored particularly high marks.

This could ultimately lead to representing England in an international competition.

Judith Wareing, who organises the challenges at Conyers, said: "Students from all the year groups have been enthusiastic while taking part in the maths challenges, and we are very proud of their success.

"One of our students, Ian Elder, did particularly well, narrowly missing selection for the National Mathematics Summer School, coming 45th from year ten entrants nationally. He was awarded a book prize for his superb efforts."
