THE Archers of the Tees fifth annual Braveheart wooden bow archery competition attracted a record 65 entrants from all over the North-East last weekend.

Colin Hope of the Chantry Bowmen won the Braveheart title with 93 hits and three petticoats giving him a score of 318.

He beat archers from as far afield as Northumberland and South Yorkshire who travelled the event at Carmel School, Darlington.

Andrea Wilson of Killingworth Archers recorded the ladies' highest score of 148 (52 hits, 21 petticoats), with Carolyn Evans of Norton second with 124 (46/22) and Phyllis Walker of Whitby third with 118 (49/20).

Ced Marr of the Whitby Company of Archers won the men's highest score with 267 (80/10).

Adam Flemming of Ponteland was second with 260 (81/11) and Lewis Mitchell of Spen Valley third with 260 (80/8).

The junior's highest score provided the Darlington-based Archers of the Tees with a home win as it was won by Stpehen White with 146 (50/24).

Adam Robinson of the Cleveland 120 Club was second with 144 (51/15) and Anne Marie Clarke, also of the Cleveland club, was third with 143 (48/14).

The Junior Wand was won by Jamie Fretweel of Chantry Bowmen with two hits, and Darren Clarke of Cleveland 120 took the Senior Wand, also with two hits.

The Lord Paramount Prize for the score closest to 106 was won by Penny Axon of Kielder Foresters. She scored 104.

The junior with the most greens was Sean Nicholson of Archers of the Tees; the senior with the most greens was Iris Mason of Kielder Foresters.

Jim Rodgers was the Field Captain and judge, and The Northern Echo's assistant editor Chris Lloyd acted as Lord Paramount.
