Darlington completed a hat-trick of defeats in the Isle of Man tournament, but produced a fighting display against First Division Burnley.
The Clarets, still smarting from an embarrassing 1-0 defeat by the amateur Isle of Man side, looked far from comfortable as Quakers took the game to them.
Glenn Naylor put them ahead in the fifth minute, turning to hit a left-foot shot beyond Paul Crichton from eight yards, following work on the left by Nottingham Forest triallist Richard Hodgson.
Burnley equalised in the 34th minute when Alan Lee was held back and referee Peter Crompton awarded a penalty. Midfielder Paul Cook scored from the spot.
Darlington regained the lead in the 70th minute, when substitute Gary Williamson ran on to a flick by Tom Kaak and bravely got a touch past the advancing keeper and defender. He then hobbled off after treatment for an ankle injury.
Burnley substitute John Mullin stabbed in a loose ball from six yards after a goalmouth scramble to equalise in the 73rd minute.
Two minutes later, Burnley were awarded a hotly disputed penalty after Adam Reed was adjudged to have held back Mullin.
But Cook's spot kick hit the post and rebounded to safety.
Man-of-the-match Cook made up for his error a minute later with a well-taken 25 yard shot, giving fit-again Quakers keeper Andy Collett no chance.
Darlington continued to press, with substitute Mark Angel looking lively on the left hand side and Kaak went close with a header and had a shot over in injury time.
Darlington: Collett, Pepper (Atkinson), Hodgson (Angel), Aspin, Reed, Liddle, Elliott, Gray, Kaak, Nogan (Williamson, Campbell), Naylor. Subs not used: Musselwhite. Scorers: Nogan (5), Cook (34 pen, 76), Williamson (70), Mullin (74).
l Darlington utility man Phil Brumwell is having a trial at Hull City.
Brumwell, who was Quakers' longest-serving player following his move from Sunderland in the summer of 1995, finished his contract at Feethams last month and became a free agent.
He played for Quakers in a friendly at Darlington RA a fortnight ago and is now having a trial at Boothferry Park, where former Darlington pair Brian Little and Kevan Smith are in charge.
However, Hull still have a transfer embargo placed upon them by the Football League and until that situation is resolved, any permanent signing will be unable to go ahead.
Keeper Mark Samways, released by Quakers, is having a trial with Conference side Doncaster
