THIS was a maiden voyage with a difference.

As the massive boat edged its way from its berth, it was confronted not by the open sea but a suburban road lined by a cheering crowd.

The vessel, which has taken 20 years to build, was moored in a back garden in Sycamore Road, Linthorpe, Middlesbrough, until the weekend.

Early on Saturday morning the vessel was taken down to the River Tees to get its first trip on the water.

To ease the boat's journey to the water, a police escort was arranged to ensure the slow progress of the vessel did not cause too much disruption.

Residents of Sycamore Road gathered to see the boat leave dry land for its new watery home.

The modest creator of the vessel has declined to be identified.
