South African striker Siyabonga Nomvete's dream of an early move to Sunderland was shattered yesterday.

Sunderland manager Peter Reid revealed he isn't planning an immeidate swoop for the 22-year-old international, who was on trial at the club last season.

"We had him over to take a close look but I don't think he meets the criteria we are looking for at the moment," said Reid.

The decision will come as a bitter blow to Nomvete, who claimed last week that Sunderland were in talks with his agent Mike Makaab.

But Reid is likely to keep tabs on the Kaiser Chiefs star and offered a hint that he may renew his interest in the future.

Nomvete, who made Sunderland his first choice destination, is still certain to leave the Chiefs this month, with Italian club Perugia the favourites to land him for £2m.

Reid also ruled himself out of the chase for Liverpool midfielder David Thompson, who is a target for Coventry.

"He's a talented young player, but I've not been in touch with Liverpool about him," said the Sunderland boss.

Thompson, admits he may have to quit Anfield to save his Premiership career. The England Under-21 midfielder has been given permission to talk to Coventry after the Sky Blues tabled a £2.5m bid.

He has also been linked Bradford and Manchester City as well as Sunderland but has agreed to meet Coventry chief Gordon Strachan.

l The Sunderland AFC Disabled Supporters and Escorts first monthly meeting of the season will be held at the Carberry Suite at the Stadium of Light tomorrow (7pm) and new members are welcome.
