POLICE are looking for public-spirited people to help them keep the streets of North Durham safe and free of crime.
The county's force hopes to boost the number of people who serve as part-time police, providing valuable back-up to regular officers.
It is hoping to attract people to increase its strength in Durham, Chester-le-Street, and the Consett and Stanley areas.
On Saturday, its special constable recruitment roadshow is visiting Framwellgate Bridge, Durham, from 9am to 4pm.
Visitors to the community safety caravan will be able to call in for a chat about the role of volunteer policemen and women.
David Carr, the assistant divisional officer for special constables in the area, said: "Anyone expressing an interest in joining the specials on Saturday will be invited to attend one of two open days taking place at Durham City police station on Saturday and Sunday, August 12 and 13.
"There they will be able to view our new promotional video about life as a special and meet volunteers who are currently serving as special constables.
"We need recruits, in particular for Durham, Chester-le-Street and Derwentside."
For more information about life as a special, call the personnel services departments at the force's headquarters on 0191-386 4929.
