ORGANISERS of two of the North-East's premier summer events were celebrating attracting record crowds after making their final calculations yesterday.
More than one million people turned out to see the 12th Sunderland International Airshow at Seaburn, Wearside, on Saturday and Sunday.
And more than 27,000 visited the Gateshead Summer Flower Show - an increase of 25 per cent on last year's attendance figurers.
Spectators at the airshow crammed on to Seaburn beach as far as the eye could see on both days, and Sunderland City Council market researchers recorded visitors coming from all over the UK and abroad.
Low cloud, causing poor visibility, disrupted the flying display on Saturday but the skies cleared on Sunday.
North-East pilot Paul Binns was the star of the show - at least as far as his family were concerned. Mr Binns from Sunderland was performing in his first show and his relatives turned out in force to watch.
The Gateshead Flower Show, organised by Gateshead Borough Council, also attracted record numbers on Saturday and Sunday. This year, a park and ride scheme was laid on to alleviate parking problems.
