The Tees around Over Dinsdale was carrying 8" of extra water and highlycoloured for Sunday's big NYSD Federation Sockburn Cup Team match writes Jeff Herbert.
The talking point was the numbers of barbel showing with several disappointed competitors parting company with powerful specimens. Darlington WMC lifted the trophy scoring 58 points and enjoyed double delight as Maurice Mudd scooped first prize returning 13.13.0. Pegged above Rosehill Weir, waggler and caster accounted for dace chub and a 7lb barbel with another fish estimated into double figures lost at the net.
Dave Nicholson, Darlington Brown Trout followed on 12.6.0. Stickfloat and caster down the nearside from peg 61 tempted a mixed roach dace and chublet catch from Dave Carter (Harrowgate Hill WMC) 12.2.0
Teams: 1 Darlington WMC 58 points, 2 Billingham Blue 54, 3 Haughton WMC 52.
Yarm AA marked the millennium hosting a two day special on Saturday/Sunday on the lower reaches of the Tees but the anticipated entry was well below par.
Day 1: Alan Wilcox of Yarm Flynns finished way out in front of the proceedings. Alan drew peg 43 opposite Aislaby cabins an under-rated swim but surprisingly on the day fished a blinder. Starting off with a few balls of of groundbait using maggot and caster over the top the whip between 4 & 5 metres attracted roach and small chublets for 11.12.0.
Weights then dipped drastically. Alan Lepatourel of Map Garbolino did the same as the winner off peg 17 on Harkers farm but had to settle for 5.1.0 at the scales.
Day 2: It was a similar story roach and chublets proved the mainstay pushing Yarm's Ken Golightly in front on 7.1.0 to pole and maggot off fisheries bend.
Overall there was a tie on 22 points but Alan Lepatourel's super weight of 10.1.8 edged John Parkinson of Dick Clegg Metro into 2nd place taking 5.11.0.
A huge barbel and a super all perch net were the perfect ingredients for a great match on the Fawdington to Myton stretch of the Swale during the Helperby Open.
Steve Evans of Doncaster was first recording 17.9.0 and needed just three fish. Steve on the bottom length above Myton worked with redworm and 4lb line to land a superb barbel of 10.4.0 adding the other specimen along with a single perch to caster and bomb.
Another highlight came when 14 year old Andrew Geldart of Team Normark landed a remarkable all perch net of 15.13. 0. Andrew took his fish steadily throughout the day feeder fishing maggot and boasted three specimens over 2lbs from Fawdington.
Returns were good despite difficult conditions in the Ripon Piscatorials Navigation Cup on the Ure around Ripon.
Those in the frame caught the majority of fish in the early and latter stages of the match. Tadcaster's Gary Bullock disposed of the opposition in style pegged above the North Bridge. Waggler and Caster accounted for 11 chub and a nice barbel of 7.6.0 which accepted waggler and maggot.
Leeds Albert Heaps followed off the noted Leathams run off tempting chub, a few grayling and lots of dace all on the caster and waggler for 21.10.0.
County Durham's Hurworth Burn Reservoir delivered a roach bonanza during Hartlepool club's Newbus Cup. Mark Arrowsmith produced a stunning display on the waggler and maggot from the east shore, putting together an all redfin score of 41lbs including several around the pound mark.
