WITH the restoration work continuing on Saltburn Pier and construction of a new sea front building, the organisers of Victorian Week have still managed to say 'it's business as usual'.
However, there will be no fireworks this year but instead, to end the event, there'll be a spectacular sound and light laser display in the Valley Gardens on Sunday evening, August 20.
This year's Victorian Week starts on Sunday, August 13, the last day of Saltburn International Folk Festival, with a joint parade led by the Teesside Pipe Band.
It is hoped that as many people as possible will dress in Victorian style throughout the week. Daily judging will take place with the best outfit of the week being chosen on Saturday, August 19.
Each year, the organisers try to combine the regular favourites with new ideas with the local voluntary groups such as the '53 Society, Saltburn community centre and theatre and Saltburn Victorians also working hard to present entertainment for all ages.
More volunteers are always needed so please contact me, Joan Guy, of the organising committee, tel: 01287 622212, if you could help for a couple of hours particularly during the final weekend. The Spa Hotel in Saltburn also provides invaluable support.
A new event this year is the Saltburn six-mile Victorian Race Walking Championships, which will take place between the top and bottom promenades on Sunday, August 20.
Entries from all over the North have been received for the event, which also includes a novice walk and a mile-and-a-half family toddle, with some racers dressed in Victorian costume.
