A CHILDREN'S day nursery could be built on an industrial estate, under proposals reveal-ed yesterday.
The single-storey building, which would cater for up to 70 children and employ 15 full-time staff, would be created on the Standard Way industrial estate on the outskirts of Northallerton.
Kids Care has submitted plans to Hambleton District Council, but they have already been greeted by some opposition.
North Yorkshire County Council's highways department said the development would set an "undesirable precedent" with a non-industrial business being set up on an industrial estate.
The department also believes the estate's footways are not designed for parents with children and pushchairs.
But a statement from North-allerton District Community Health Council said: "We are in favour of the development taking place in this area of the town because the potential traffic safety would be more positive as opposed to those in existence in the High Street.
"We are, however, concerned that the plans do not show any outdoor play area as we feel this is an integral part of growing up and learning social skills from an early age."
But planning officers are recommending approval for the scheme, saying it is an employment generator and amended plans are likely to include an outdoor area.
