FIVE people were injured in a crash on a busy main road yesterday afternoon.
The accident, involving a lorry and five cars, brought rush hour chaos to east Cleveland.
The crash happened on the A171 Whitby-to-Guisborough road near the Jolly Sailor pub.
It is believed that at least one of the victims was seriously injured and was taken to hospital after treatment at the scene by paramedics.
The accident stretched Cleveland emergency services to the limit, with six fire crews being called out. Paramedics and police had to call for assistance from their colleagues in North Yorkshire.
The road was closed between Scaling Dam and the accident scene for more than four hours, with diversions set up through Danby and Castleton.
Rush hour traffic in the area was severely affected, with delays of up to half an hour.
It is the third major accident on the road during the last few months.
