A SWIMMING club set up to help youngsters suffering from asthma has been given a cash boost by generous shoppers.

Sunderland Asthmatic Swimming Club was presented with £400 from the North-Eastern Co-op's community dividend, which will be spent on things such as floats.

The fund is made up of donations made by Co-op dividend cardholders who want to support projects that benefit the community.

A spokeswoman for the North-Eastern Co-op said: "The club, which meets at the swimming pool of Sunderland's Thornhill School, has been running for more than 20 years.

"It was set up to help young asthma sufferers by teaching them how to breathe correctly through aquatic exercise.

"The Co-op's grant awarded by the business's Wearside divisional committee, will fund new floats and armbands and will also pay for badges and certificates.''
