BEING a Darlington FC supporter has its fair share of ups and downs.
But when you are following them from a wheelchair things can be even more difficult.
This is what 35-year-old Paul Hodgson has done since a bout of meningitis as a child left him facing a range of physical problems.
Paul, known as Flipper to his friends, refused to be defeated by his disability, and has gone on to lead an active and colourful life. He has published his autobiography to challenge the stereotype of the wheelchair-bound victim condemned to a life on the sidelines.
In his book, which was launched on Saturday, he tells of his battles against prejudice to secure a job, and his successful charity fundraising events.
Paul recounts a lifetime following Darlington FC, through his experiences with prejudiced stewards to his encounters with hooligans.
Friend Kevan Smith, who recently left his role as Darlington's football in the community officer to become assistant manager at Hull City, said: "I didn't realise how tough a life Paul had until I read the book. It really touched me and I admire him even more for it."
Paul's book, Flipper's Side, can be obtained from bookshops, or by contacting him direct on (01325) 372730 or (07930) 274704
