DETECTIVES are hunting robbers who hijacked a Royal Mail van after threatening to shoot the driver.
The incident started as the 29-year-old driver delivered parcels to Blagdon Street, in Byker, Newcastle, on Saturday morning.
Two men attacked him from behind, and it is understood he was then ordered to drive the van out of the city.
The red Sherpa van is believed to have been driven onto the Quayside and across the Swing Bridge to Gateshead.
It was abandoned on a country lane, off Coach Road, near Lobley Hill.
The robbers, who are believed to have switched to another vehicle, escaped with parcels containing valuables, although police have declined to reveal their value.
The postman suffered minor injuries and shock.
A police spokesman said. "He was assaulted and had something pushed into his back, and told he would be shot if he didn't do what they said. He never actually saw a gun, but the incident has left him shocked."
Forensic officers are expected to carry out a detailed examination of the van.
Detectives want to hear from anyone who saw the vehicle, which has Royal Mall markings, after it was hijacked.
The robbers were aged in their early twenties and of medium height and build. One was wearing a fluorescent yellow and green workmen's jacket and a baseball cap. The other was wearing a three-quarter length red jacket and baseball cap.
