ONE of the biggest names in regional baking has found that the British Army really does march on its stomach, after the opening of a store.
Tyneside bakery firm Greggs began its expansion into North Yorkshire by opening a shop at Catterick Garrison, home of Europe's largest military base.
The move has created ten jobs in the area, and staff are delighted with the shop's initial success, in the face of tough competition from a 24-hour Tesco supermarket.
Sales director Gillian Long said: "We have done extremely well in the first couple of weeks.
"The shop design is focused very much on takeaway. Savoury and sandwich sales are very high and a lot of the business is for the take-home market.
"The trading pattern is quite different here too, with more sales later in the day. We are looking at extending our opening hours to capitalise on this.
