A man who died in a five vehicle collision on Friday has been identified as 48-year-old Roger Geoffrey Flower.
Mr Flower, of Captain Cook's Close, Staithes, North Yorkshire, is the third person to have died on the notorious A171 Whitby to Guisborough road this year - and the tenth fatality in the past six years.
The accident happened 150m south east of the Jolly Sailor pub at about 4pm and involved four cars and a van.
The crash has triggered fresh calls for action over the single carriageway road.
In May, Alan Malcolm, 49, of Marton, Middlesbrough, died when his motorbike and a car collided on the same stretch of road. Last month, Arthur Finch, 72, was killed as he attempted to cross the road.
Safety campaigners have demanded the road be upgraded to dual carriageway but that would cost an estimated £30m.
Inspector Mick Bennett, of Cleveland Police, said: "We have looked at the last few accidents that have occurred on this road. There have been various causes which have contributed to the accidents and there is no one solution."
Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident and anyone with information is asked to call (01642) 301558.
