A LEADING charity for deaf people has been given a £123,000 National Lottery grant to help set up a drop-in centre in Gateshead.
The cash will enable Hearing Concern to set up a resource centre where deaf and hard of hearing people can call in for advice and help.
The grant will contribute towards salaries for a full-time regional manager and an administrator, rent, running costs, staff and volunteer training, and travel costs.
Shaurna Dickson, of Hearing Concern, said: "We are looking at premises in Gateshead - it needs to be central so people can get there easily. If we can't find appropriate premises in Gateshead then we will look elsewhere in the region.
"It will include an equipment room and a satellite service where Hearing Concern advisors will go out to people's homes if they can't get to the centre.
