A SCHOOL'S bid to open up its premises to the disabled has attracted an award.
Easington Community College has won a Durham County Council environment prize in recognition of its efforts to improve access to its grounds and buildings.
This year's awards introduced an "Access for All" category for projects which best accommodate people with different needs, including those with mobility problems.
In response, Easington Community College carried out an access audit of the school and site.
The study included a series of before and after photographs highlighting potential problem areas for the disabled.
Responding to the in-depth analysis, the school has installed toilets for the disabled and ramps.
In addition, pupils study disability issues as part of their personal and social education programme.
Brigid Murray, access activist and member of the judging panel, and Ed Turnbul, an Agenda 21 officer responsible for organising the access awards, travelled to the school to hand over certificates and a cash award of £100.
The school has also received an engraved plaque which will be displayed.
