Christopher Hogg has eyes on becoming the region's next Bryan Robson, Peter Beardsley, or even Paul Gascoigne.

He puts his foot on the next rung on the ladder of success, selected to train with the England U-15 squad.

The 15-year-old, who is a member of the York City School of Excellence, says he was surprised when he received a letter from the FA confirming his call-up.

"I was amazed," he said. "I was watched by an England scout a few times, but I didn't know. Nobody knew I was being watched."

Christopher, from Stainton Village, has been a member of York City's youth teams since the age of 11 and has been captain at his age group for the last two years.

During the forthcoming season Christopher, who attends Conyers School in Yarm, will play at U-16 level although it won't be a new experience for him. The manager selected Christopher to played at that level last year when a member of the U-15s to see how he'd cope.

"The manager thought I was good enough."

Before he signed for York he spent a year training with Manchester United at a base in Durham.

At 6ft tall he could be expected to become an automatic choice to be a central defender. However, his position in the team could have been much different had his York manager not confused him with a teammate some years ago!

"When I first went to York with my friend, who was a central defender, the York manger got us mixed-up.

"So I played in the centre of defence and my friend played in midfield.

"I play in central midfield for my school and for my district. I don't mind either, I enjoy playing in both positions."

Christopher's chance to impress the England coaches is at the end of the month when he will spend three days at the FA training centre at Lilleshall where he is hoping to earn a place in the squad for their forthcoming tour
