THE standard of the floats in this year's St Wilfrid procession in Ripon was the highest ever, say organisers.
The procession is part of an ancient tradition, dating back to 1108 when King Henry I granted permission for a fair to be held on the feast of St Wilfrid. It commemorates the return of Ripon's patron saint.
A citizen of Ripon plays the part of St Wilfrid. This year, Mr Peter Duffield rode the Countess of Swinton's horse Marquis - right - as he led the procession round the four-mile route, taking in each of the city's old gateways.
He was seen off by Canon Harold Parker from St Wilfrid's RC church in the city, and was welcomed back by Canon Keith Punshon at Ripon cathedral, where a special service was held.
Mrs Jean Potts, chairman of the procession committee said: "There weren't as many Ripon old cars in this year's procession, but the 21 floats were absolutely excellent and the atmosphere round the city was wonderful."
One of the spectacular floats is pictured above. They included The Ugly Bug Ball by Long Meadows nursing home, Ripon Ragtime Razamatazz by the bowling club, a Caribbean Extravaganza by the Station hotel, Beach Party by Ripon City Panthers and Grease by the leisure centre. - Pictures: Bill Robson/DS
