PLANS to transform a tract of land into a cycle track are likely to be approved, despite objections from residents.

The proposals for land at the Derwentside College annexe in Lanchester include a looped cycle track, a trials track, and jump track.

It is hoped that it would provide a useful recreational facility for youngsters living in the area.

But residents from Deanery View have sent Derwentside District Council two letters of objection and a petition. They fear track activities will create a nuisance and disturbance.

In a report to the authority's development control committee, planning officer Simon le Jeune says: "I would not consider the scale or the nature of these proposals to be out of character with the recreational activities currently undertaken at the college.

He has recommended that permission be granted on condition that the track be used from 9am to 6pm on weekdays and Saturdays and from 9am to 5pm on Sundays and Bank and public holidays
