A Labour MP is set to return to Westminster after overcoming a life-threatening illness.
Father of two Alan Campbell, 43, MP for Tynemouth, underwent surgery for the removal of a tumour on his spine three months ago.
He announced yesterday he was making a good recovery and would be returning to parliament in October.
He saw his consultant last week and said: "I am pleased to say it was very positive. He was happy with the progress I am making.
"I have to go back in November to have some x-rays and make sure everything is okay but he is happy I am on the mend. Obviously it takes time and it is still painful, but he has given me the all clear to go on holiday as long as I don't do anything too strenuous."
Mr Campbell had a tumour removed from the top of his spine during a four and a half hour operation at Newcastle General Hospital.
It turned out to be benign but without prompt treatment he could have ended up in a wheelchair or even died.
The MP is planning to return to his office full time next month before Parliament resumes on October 23.
