TWO police officers were injured when their panda car left the road and crashed into a telegraph pole.
The officers were trapped in the wreckage and were rescued by a taxi driver who used the police radio to summon help.
PC Emma Downing, 27, and her passenger, probationer PC Hannah Wilson, 23, based at Bishop Auckland, County Durham, were hurt in the accident at High Etherley.
Unable to get a signal on his mobile phone, the taxi driver, who was on his way home to Toft Hill, reached into the car where the officers were trapped and used the radio to raise the alarm.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash, which happened at 2am yesterday as the constables were on their way to deal with a fight between rival gangs at a nearby holiday park.
Another policewoman and a male officer were later hurt dealing with the brawl at Witton Castle, which resulted in three arrests.
It took fire crews almost an hour to free PC Downing, who has serious pelvic injuries and cuts to her arm.
She is being treated in Darlington Memorial Hospital, where her condition is stable.
PC Wilson sustained neck, arm and back injuries but went home yesterday.
Acting Inspector Kevin Tuck, of Bishop Auckland police, said: "The taxi driver did a very good job and showed great presence of mind.
"We are very grateful for his intervention because the officers were able to be rescued quickly."
