A MISSIONARY is leaving his home in the Durham Dales in an attempt to break the scourge of voodoo hanging over a Caribbean island - armed only with a 20ft crate of French Bibles.
Care worker Bill Worley is one of seven Britons - five men and two women - who are flying out to Haiti on September 17 with Bible Mission International.
Mr Worley, who lives at Frosterley in Weardale, admits that they will have an uphill struggle in converting people who have been steeped in voodooism for centuries.
One of the main problems facing the group will be having to converse in French, which is the national language of Haiti - the poorest country in the world.
"There are also very few Christians in the country," said Mr Worley. "Voodooism is the national religion of Haiti."
During their two-week stay, the seven missionaries will be based at an orphanage and they are hoping to start teaching the Christian faith to the children there.
"Since the notorious Papa Doc was ousted from power, things have quietened down in Haiti. I believe there is one holiday firm offering trips there," said Mr Worley.
Apart from the French Bibles, the mission will also be taking large supplies of medicine and clothing and cuddly toys for the children.
"Little gifts and a lot of kindness are always appreciated where ever you travel in the world.
"And when you are covered with the blood of Jesus Christ you will always be OK."
